This assistance program provides a variety of assistance services and aid for needy residents of Clark County and Las Vegas. It helps those that are not assisted by other federal, state, or local government assistance programs. You can receive rent help from a Clark County Social Service rental assistance program that offers $400 a month towards payments. The number Las Vegas and Clark County families using the rental assistance program increased from 23,400 during the six-month period from September 2007 to February 2008 to almost 36,000 during the same six months a year later. This is equal to a 54 percent increase in people needing help. Applicants to the rent assistance program can apply for the grants and checks up to three times a year. Lutheran Social Services Of Nevada provides food and other assistance to those in need. People of all religions and faiths can receive help. In addition, they also provide holiday food programs, seasonal items, and eve a school backpack program. The program also provides direct financial employment support, employment related transportation assistance, rental assistance, and utility bill assistance when funds are available. In addition to the food assistance above, Lutheran Social Services Of Nevada (phone number 702-639–1730) also provides help with rent, utility bills, and transportation when they have funds to do so. They will also provide counseling.

Las Vegas and Clark County have been hit hard by the housing crisis. However there are many different options and programs in place that people can turn to, that may be able to help. Nevada has instituted a newforeclosure mediation process, the federal government is providing aid, banks such as Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase have foreclosure prevention programs, and people can even learn how to delay a foreclosure.

Housing Help for Nevada helps Clark County and Las Vegas homeowners by offering free foreclosure intervention services to those who are behind on their mortgage or who face imminent danger of foreclosure. 702-804-9777.

If you need help reducing credit card or medical debts, or need additional free foreclosure counseling, then homeowners and those in debt have other options. Another non-profit agency that can provide both foreclosure and debt help is Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Southern Nevada. They can help people deal with credit card and medical debt. On the other hand, if a Cook County homeowner is facing foreclosure, the counselors can guide borrowers through the process and offer them access to foreclosure prevention programs. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is providing about $1.5 million in funds that are to be used for rent help, and the vouchers are being provided through the HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. The Clark County Housing Authority ((702) 451-1602) is set to receive the federal grants, which are to be used as rental assistance that was created under a supportive housing program for homeless veterans. The governments HUD-VASH rental assistance is a giant step in the right direction for helping our veterans and service members who need the aid.

Through the HUD-VASH, public housing authorities and other organizations all across the country provide permanent supportive housing and they employ dedicated VA case managers for an estimated 10,000 homeless veterans in the Las Vegas area. The Clark County Housing Authority is receiving $1,494,483 for the program as part of the total of $75 million in funds that are being awarded at this time through the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which is part of the Obama stimulus program.

Economic Opportunity Board Of Clark County may have funds or advice for paying rent, as the board was established to assist low-income people to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life. (702) 647-3307.

A number of housing programs are meant to help families and individuals who have lost their jobs, have had a reduction in income or can’t make their rent payments. Each resource in the Las Vegas and Clark County region will have its own restrictions and qualifications that need to be met. However in general money can be used to provide for rent assistance, pay for moving costs, security deposits, and possibly other housing costs such as mortgage payments, or any expense that is related to the transition into a new home or that helps someone save their current home.

Priority is often given to the elderly, women, families with children, and people who have lost their jobs and who may be in danger of losing their home or being evicted. Some of the non-profit agencies and/or churches to call for emergency rental assistance include United Family Community Services (phone (702) 649-5995) as well as Nevada State Welfare Division ((800) 992-0900) to name but a few. This agency, which can be reached at (702) 870-4430 offers numerous programs and services to people who need help. Among other things, the Salvation Army offers direct emergency assistance and cash grants to individuals and families, including free clothing, utility bill and air conditioning assistance, food, employment cards, transportation and medical prescriptions. The Pathways program they run will assist those clients who are lacking resources to meet their needs for preventative and medical services, prescription drug medications, health concerns and physical exams.

The Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada (CCSN) has many programs. They can help with a multitude of concerns that people may face in their daily lives. This agency is one of the leading non-profits in Clark County, Henderson Nevada, and the southern part of the state. Individuals of all races, religions, and backgrounds may receive emergency financial counseling and support services. Supportive Services to Maintain Stability – This program takes callers only on Monday morning. Applicants need an appointment. For those with a proven hardship, but that have the capability to assist themselves, there may be help on site. This includes emergency rent assistance, free food, homeless prevention, and funds for security deposits. There may also be zero interest loans, bus passes, job training, and more. Nevada Partners covers the Henderson Nevada portion of Clark County. The non-profit may have security deposit, energy bill, or other forms of rent assistance. Call the Henderson site at 702-924-2100.

HELP of Southern Nevada is another non-profit that helps thousands of people per year. They offer assistance that ranges from weatherization programs, to holiday gifts and meals, free food, and even the occasional assistance for paying energy bills. The agency can be contacted at (702) 369-4357. They do their best to better serve the poor, the homeless, unemployed and those in crisis who come to the agency as a place of last resort.

Other services from HELP include job search placement from their W.O.R.C. center, free Christmas gifts, an emergency shelter in Las Vegas, and referrals. While most of the funding is issued in the form of partial payments, in some cases those applicants with a limited income may qualify for a loan to pay their rent or address other needs. United Family Community Services (UFCS) both offers information and refers struggling individuals to assistance programs, and they may also be able to provide aid themselves. You can apply for aid, and after eligibility determination is made, they have programs that can assist with paying your rent, offer utility bill assistance, run an on-site food bank, and even offer clothing and employment assistance. Nevada Community Associates, Inc., or NCA, may be able to help the less fortunate, by appointment only. The non-profit may have financial assistance for rental expenses, including deposits and late fees. Mortgage assistance may be provided too as well. Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority offers apartments to low to moderate income families in the area. A limited number of units are available. (702) 922-6800

Nevada H.A.N.D is for seniors as well as other low income qualified individuals. They administer housing solutions, including senior assisted living. income and other restrictions are in place for any low income apartments. 295 E. Warm Springs Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89119. Call (702) 739-3345.

Clark County Community Associates – Grants are offered for helping with evictions. It may include rental assistance, funds for paying energy bills and more. Clients may receive information on zero percent interest loans, federal government grants to pay utility or rental deposits, and other financial aid. there are also case management services in Las Vegas. The Shade Tree administers low income, transitional housing. Veterans, domestic violence victims, and the evicted / homeless are some clients. Stability, case management, and eventually referrals to permanent housing and apartments are available. A minimal rent is due on a monthly basis. 702-385-0072

Women’s Development Center offers a resource known as the LINK Program. It offers case management and financial assistance to homeless individuals or families or people facing imminent eviction. Clark County Social Services and Cash Assistance – The county government administers several public aid and cash assistance programs for the low income, working poor, and unemployed. Another local branch of the Salvation Army, In Mesquite – North Rural Clark County – Mesquite & Bunkerville, runs several of its own assistance programs, including providing emergency social services such as the federal government funded EFSP, emergency shelter, rental assistance, USDA Commodity Food for families and seniors, utility assistance, gasoline vouchers, food, clothing, furniture, McDonald’s food vouchers, Thanksgiving, Christmas food boxes, and the annual Angel Tree. United Labor Agency of Las Vegas NV (phone 702-648-3500) may provides emergency assistance with rent and utilities to prevent homelessness and utility turn-off.

Family Resource Center of Southern Clark County helps people in the zip codes of 89019, 89026, 89028, 89029, 89039, & 89046. Access emergency financial assistance for paying rent, utilities, cooling bills and prescription needs. State of Nevada – Department of Health and Human Services and in particular the Division of Welfare & Supportive Services runs the Energy Assistance Program in Clark County. It focuses on providing help with summer cooling bills and overall energy costs. The funds are limited and are usually exhausted each year. Clark County Aging and Disability Services Office offers assistance and information for seniors. The programs are wide ranging and help thousands of residents per year. Assistance with summer heat – People of all incomes and backgrounds can escape to so called cooling centers and shelters. This will allow individuals and families to get out of the hot weather, receive items like free fans, and more. Jewish Family Service Agency (JFSA) – A program will help pay for emergency rent, utilities and some other immediate needs for Jewish individuals and families who are faced with an unexpected crisis. Rescue Mission – The very low income, homeless, and working poor from Clark County Nevada can turn to the center for help. Some programs, such as the food pantry and thrift store, are open to everyone across the community. Other resources, such as shelter and transitional housing, are more focused on people struggling with their rent or the homeless. Short term and low income housing programs operate across Clark County and Las Vegas. These resources range from emergency shelter to transitional housing type services. Families behind on their rent and facing eviction or the currently homeless are the main beneficiaries. The non-profits and centers will offer a place to stay for a few days up to several weeks, but more importantly help people achieve self-sufficiency and find new, permanent homes or apartments to live in. Clothes and household goods – Non-profits, charities, and thrift stores in Clark County can provide families with basic needs. Those who meet low income standards may receive vouchers for free items. Las Vegas – Clark County – Urban League – A service known as The Family Development Department will provide services for rental & utilities assistance as well as emergency housing. This is the local community action agency and the center offers other support services as well.

Low income families can contact the Urban League for information on WIC, child care subsidies or the Head Start program. If you can’t afford a doctor, or have no or limited health insurance, Community Outreach Medical Center((702) 657-3873) is a clinic that can help. The primary goal of the clinic is to provide affordable or no cost medical care to people who need help. In addition, the medical professionals also strive to improve the lives of those patients in urban Las Vegas by offer them high quality, confidential medical care in a fashion that is seen in private practice settings.

Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (Formally Clark County Legal Services) runs a Pro Bono Project that provides free legal assistance with placement of legal matters with private attorneys/lawyers who have agreed to accept cases at no charge and free to clients Types of matters placed may include foreclosures, debt collection, real estate, family law issues, and bankruptcy. A couple dozen non-profits around Las Vegas, Henderson, and Clark County Nevada administer the Head Start program for low income children. Services offered include school preparedness, medical and health care, and social services. The child’s immediate family may also be able to receive assistance from the Head Start agencies in Las Vegas area. The program is free to qualified individuals.
