Children’s Day 2012 | Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum – A children’s museum in Reno, Nevada.


In honor of National Children’s Day, The Discovery invites your family to join us in celebrating our future — our children. We’ve partnered with local community agencies and organizations that provide services, activities and mentoring to our region’s children to celebrate the joy, accomplishments and potential that children bring to our community. We hope to see you here!

Free face painting Free Face Painting10:00am – 6:00pmBecome the fairy, angel, tiger, butterfly or superhero you’ve always wanted to be when members of The Discovery’s staff paint your face for free!
Paper people Paper People10:00am – 8:00pmVisit Art Alcove to help build a paper community. Make your very own paper person and take it home, or add it to the display!
Cardboard city Cardboard City10:00am – 8:00pmDon’t miss this hands-on, community-building workshop. Visitors of all ages are invited to build the structures that make up a community using cardboard and other assorted art supplies. Make something to take home with you, or leave your mark by contributing to this collaborative art installation that will be on display in the museum.
Comet Meteorites and Meteorwrongs10:00am – 12:00pm, 2:00 – 4:00pmOur friends from Fleischmann Planetarium & Science Center will be offering make-a-comet demonstrations, meteorites and meteorwrongs, a make-your-own-crater activity, and other exciting things related to the solar system.
Free Italian Ince Free Italian Ice12:00 – 2:00pmGrab a ticket the front desk between noon and 2:00pm and head to Picnic Place to Enjoy a tasty treat compliments of The Discovery.
Monster Boxes Create a Monster Box!12:00 – 4:00pmJoin our friends from the Nevada Museum of Art to create a colorful, one-of-a-kind monster box using washable paints. Use your imagination to create scary, funny and friendly monsters. These boxes are great for storing treasures and trinkets or as a very special gift.
Fire truck Take Photos on a Fire Truck!3:00 – 6:00pmOur friends from the National Automobile Museum will be displaying their 1917 American LaFrance fire truck in The Discovery’s parking lot. Families can take a photos in the truck and pick up Smokey the Bear fire safety information.
Fencing demos and classes Fencing Demonstrations & ClassesDemonstrations: 3:15pm, 4:15pm; Classes: 3:30pm, 4:30pmEn garde! Our friends from High Desert Fencing Alliance will be giving two demonstrations of this fast growing, highly competitive sport. In between the demonstrations, join in a class to learn the basics of battle.
Nano science Discover Nano Science4:30 – 7:30pmBig breakthroughs can come from really small science. In this open lab you’ll explore how nano technology is changing the way scientific research and experimentation is done.
The Wonderful World of Underwood Venture into the Wonderful World of UnderwoodShowtimes: 10:30am, 3:30pm, 4:30pmChildren of all ages are invited to meet characters such as Bobby Pin, Stinky, Lewis Mouseman, Earl Grey and The Guy Who Steals Your Socks when storyteller Kathleen Durham leads the journey into the Wonderful World of Underwood.
Lizzards, snakes, etc. Meet Some Scaly Friends!Showtimes: 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pmDave Boland, vice president of the Reno Herpetological Society, will visit The Discovery along with his scaly friends. Museum guests will hear interesting facts about reptiles and amphibians and learn about various conservation methods.
